The Solution

We, the People of the United States, in order to form more perfect union..

Where do youths and criminals get the guns?

In most accidental, suicidal and homicidal shootings, the guns were accessed because they were not properly secured by the owner.  According to The Bureau of Justice's Firearm and Crime Statistics 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from:

  • a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
  • a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
  • family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%

For 1987-92 victims reported an annual average of about 341,000 incidents of firearm theft.   The actual number exceeds reports.  In California alone the number of guns stolen from homes is estimated to be greater than 100,000 annually.

If you have a gun, kids will find it and they will play with it.

According to several recent studies including the American Academy of Pediatrics, shootings would be greatly reduced if the guns were properly stored.  Nationally, 30 Thousand people are killed, 90 Thousand people survive and economists and public heath statisticians estaimate $100 Billion is spent every year as a result of gun violence.  This lost money would buy a gun safe for every gun.

There is no place to "hide" a gun.  All people have the same "hiding" places. In fact, most burglars find a gun to steal within 4 minutes.

Stopping criminal and child access means keeping your gun secured in your home.   A gun safe should be bolted to the studs in the wall of a house in order to prevent the gun safe from being removed from the home and opened at a remote location by a youth or a criminal.

A gun safe (lock box) bolted into the wall or floor of your home is your wisest choice.  Why?

  1. Youths and criminals finding a key to the trigger lock, cable lock or gun safe; or
  2. Youths and criminals removing the gun including the trigger lock, cable lock or gun safe entirely to a remote location for dismantling.

Stop Our Shootings, Inc., together with the California Attorney General's office, is working hard to assist people with information on how they can properly secure their guns.  The following link will present you with a list of gun safes that have met the standards established by the California Department of Justice.

Don't take the chance of hearing those terrible words I had to hear: "Your child's been shot!"   A little effort on everyone's part can change the future of our country.   Please do your part and help make America a safe place to live with peace of mind.
